The Golden Compass

I’d been nervous about the film adaptation of Phillip Pullman’s great sci-fi/fantasy epic The Golden Compass ever since I’d seen an “in development” trailer for it at work about a year ago. I tried to psych myself up going into the theater this past Sunday, but I still had niggling doubts. The book is a [...]

Sight and sound

Two big ones: Andrew Bird and Juno.
Andrew Bird: Saw him play live at the Orpheum on Friday night. I actually almost missed the show. I got distracted talking to friends and didn’t remember until an alarm went off on my iPhone (inexplicably) at 8—when the show was starting. In any event I booked it to [...]

Gaming things

A few miscellaneous gaming (and tangentially gaming-related) things while I’m thinking about them (and because nerdology’s database seems to be fucked—Sean, I’m looking at you).

Andrew Vestal linked this over at his blog and now I pass it along to anyone who doesn’t read that but reads this (see: like 5 people, maybe). It’s an album [...]

“The time has come,” the walrus said…

So, welcome to the new year, I suppose. Here’s to 2007, the year I get mobile—Vespa, here I come! …Slowly. You know, once I have money. And a motorcycle license. Still working on those last two bits. It’s a goal, anyway.
I’m writing here this morning because right now, just up the coast in San Francisco, [...]

Who needs sleep?

Went to bed early. Was woken up at quarter to midnight by my Chinese roommate arriving home. Can’t fall back to sleep. I have to be up for work in less than 4 hours now.
Watched The City of Lost Children with Rian last night. It’s a Jeunet film (that’s the director of Amèlie, for reference), [...]

The Fountain

So I had the opportunity to watch Darren Aronofsky’s new film The Fountain here at the office last week. The film itself is good, not without problems, but definitely worth seeing. I’d like to see it again in the theater, if only because the DCT’s levels were so fucked—a lot of the dark portions of [...]

New toys give me Happy Feet

Two things today: my new Mac Pro, and Warner Bros. upcoming movie “Happy Feet.”
I can say confidently and without a doubt that the Mac Pro is the fastest computer I’ve ever had the privilege to use. Coming off a 3-year-old 1.25GHz 15″ PowerBook G4, it’s like a whole new world of the Apple experience. Boots [...]

A problem of leisure

Rian got off work last night, and our goal for the evening was to keep him up all night, since we both start grave shift together on Sunday night—getting adjusted took me a few days, so we figured we’d learn from my difficulties and get him started an extra day early. Of course, our first [...]
